  • Halifax, NS

  • Full-time

Climate change is the most pressing challenge of our time, and the need for a technical solution to climate change has never been greater. As engineers, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to change the world’s climate pessimism into optimism. We’re Planetary Hydrogen (https://www.planetaryhydrogen.com/) ; a new, innovative company that provides carbon removal services to clients. Modeled on natural oceanic processes, our innovative Ocean Air Capture (OAC) system removes greenhouse gases from the air while balancing local ocean chemistry. With OAC, we can remove carbon dioxide directly from the air or capture it from a concentrated source like a power plant, storing it safely for 100,000 years. We’re currently servicing major clients (such as Shopify). Given the success of our current technology, we are developing a new power plant that will effectively employ our technology and produce carbon neutral hydrogen. We’re looking for an experienced electrochemical engineer who will be a major contributor to that project. Join our team and make a difference The main purpose of this role will be to conduct research, development, and improvement of our electrochemical processes. Using industry experience in the field, you will apply a sound understanding of electrochemical processes and components (chlor-alkali, sulfate chemistry, non-chloride salts) to ensure project success. Slated for 2022-2023, planning for our power plant consists of a few distinct phases, and your work will be essential to each. First, you’ll be optimizing process flow sheets and process simulations to ensure the feasibility and effectiveness of the chemistry. Eventually, the project will move into the commercialization phase, where you’ll modify and iterate on designs to maximize energy output/production and minimize costs. Generally, you’ll be a resource for the team: providing expertise on chemical processes, as well as project management and support for contractors. More specifically, you will: o Lead process design during studies, research, FEED and detailed engineering project phases o Provide technical support of process design work including calculations, drawings and testwork o Budget and resource forecast management for the process study scope o Manage and oversee contract work related to your projects o Interface with other engineering disciplines to deliver best practice process design o Stay current on latest process technology developments o Design innovation/lean thinking into process designs o Demonstrate leadership in industry safety protocols o Provide leadership and mentoring to junior team members Working with Planetary Hydrogen This will be a full-time, permanent position, with flexible hours (typically from 9am to 4pm) Monday to Friday, with some need for flexibility around busy times and project deadlines. Once travel becomes viable, occasional travel to sites and contractor offices will be required. You’ll receive a comprehensive salary commensurate with experience. You’ll also have medical/dental benefits and flexible vacations. We are a young, ambitious, innovative start-up looking to make a difference for the world and grow our business. Operating for just over 18 months, and with a small team of just 10 people, Planetary Hydrogen offers a number of benefits to employees. You’ll have an immediate impact on our company and have all the advantages that come with joining an ambitious project early on. Qualifications * 5+ years’ experience in an industrial electrochemical environment working as a chemical engineer or similar * Good understanding of the economic levers within the chlor-alkali or other scaled electrochemical systems * Experience with non-traditional chemistries for salt splitting such as sulfate chemistry, or other non-chloride salts * Experience moving projects from concept to design and implementation * Experience in project management and supervision * Experience in process simulation software would be an asset * Ability to work on out Nova Scotia site would be a strong asset How to Apply Our online application will give you the option to apply to this role as a complete person – not just a resume. The application will assess your qualifications, personality traits and workplace preferences, and should take 10 to 15 minutes to complete. After submitting, you’ll receive an email inviting you to log in and view your assessment results. We strive to build a team that reflects the diversity of the community we work in, and encourage applications from traditionally underrepresented groups such as women, visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, people identifying as LGBTQ2SI, veterans, and people with disabilities. If we can make this easier through accommodation in the recruitment process, please contact us using the “Help” button. We will review applications, with priority given to those who have completed the assessment, and look forward to hearing from you.
