As part of the Hightech Agenda Bayern initiative of the State of Bavaria, the University of Passau is consistently expanding its long-term focus areas ‘Digitalisation, ‘Networked Society’ and ‘Europe’, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence and its implications. This expansion includes interdisciplinary research and teaching foci at the interface between digital transformation; methods of knowledge generation and decision support; economic, cultural and social interactions of artificial intelligence; and basic research in mathematics and computer science. All those involved collaborate across academic disciplines and/or faculty boundaries with a critically reflective mindset, contributing their methodological know-how and applying their subject expertise.

The School of Business, Economics and Information Systems at the University of Passau invites applications for the post of

Chair of Information Systems with a focus on Explainable-AI-based Business Information Systems (pay grade W3)

to start on 1 April 2021.

This newly created W3 professorship will represent the subject of information systems in research and teaching. Applicants should have their main research interest in the area of AI-based business information systems with particular emphasis on explainable AI. Research focusing on the context of economic analysis of AI technologies, the design of software development processes in companies and the analysis and design of AI-based information systems are of particularly great interest. The most promising candidates will have gained international visibility through publications in leading journals and are able to work on questions related to the field of information systems at the highest methodological level. The postholder should be experienced in obtaining external (‘third-party’) funding. He or she is expected to engage in cooperative and interdisciplinary research projects, some of which will be financed using external funds, and to contribute to interdisciplinary bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes with an information-systems content. Furthermore, active participation in the academic self-administration and the further profile-building of the University of Passau in the key thematic area of Digitalisation, Networked Society and (Internet) Cultures is desired. It is expected that the postholder cooperate with the other professorships associated with the newly established university institute for research on AI and sustainability (working title: KINECT) and within KI-Netzwerk Bayern (Bavarian AI Network).

The School of Business, Economics and Information Systems is a young and particularly innovative faculty with dynamic drive. Economic and societal relevance, a drive for innovation and an interdisciplinary approach are the pillars of our research activities, which comprise both basic and applied research as well as knowledge transfer. Our focus areas are Accounting, Finance and Taxation (AFT), Economics (ECON), Management, Innovation, Marketing (MIM), Information Systems (IS) and Quantitative Methods (QM).

The successful candidate will be educated to doctoral level and either possess a formal postdoctoral qualification, such as the German ‘Habilitation’, or equivalent academic achievements, garnered within or outside the higher education system or as part of a prior assistant professor or comparable role (e.g. German ‘Juniorprofessur’). He or she will have demonstrated pedagogical aptitude and academic excellence, whereby the latter is generally established on the basis of the quality of his/her doctoral research and subsequent achievements, as applicable. In accordance with Art. 10(3)(1) BayHSchPG (the Bavarian higher education employment act), candidates must not be more than 52 years of age at the time of their appointment.
