DTU Civil Engineering is inviting applications for a 3-year PhD position starting winter 2020.
People spend about 90% of their time indoors (e.g., in buildings, in transport, etc.), and therefore indoor environment has significant effects on occupant comfort, health and well-being. Buildings globally are one of the most intensive users of energy and a large part of this energy is used for conditioning indoor environments. There is a global need to find heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) solutions that create optimal indoor environments with minimum energy use, and at the same time, these solutions should also be sustainable and resilient.
An international research project (IEA EBC Annex 80 – Resilient Cooling) is focusing on developing and defining resiliency criteria for building HVAC systems. In parallel with this project, the overall aim of the PhD project is to study the potential and limitations of existing cooling and ventilation systems (building-attached) in terms of resiliency and to develop building-detached and occupant-attached HVAC systems that are sustainable, resilient, and energy-efficient. The focus will be on personal and personalized HVAC systems. The work will focus on developing these systems, and defining their evaluation and performance criteria with a focus on resiliency.
The work will include theoretical evaluations, dynamic simulations (either by existing tools or by development of in-house software), experiments in climate chambers and possibly field studies. The candidate will be involved in ongoing national and international projects and expected to contribute actively to these projects.
- M.Sc. degree or equivalent education in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, sustainable energy engineering or similar areas
- Experience with evaluating indoor environmental quality and HVAC system performance by means of climate chamber measurements
- Experience with dynamic building simulation tools for indoor environment and energy performance assessment of buildings (knowledge of and experience with TRNSYS and IDA ICE is an advantage)
- Theoretical and working knowledge on low temperature heating and high temperature cooling systems in buildings, with a focus on radiant ceiling panels and their coupling potentials with renewable energy resources (experience in working with Phase Change Materials is an advantage)
- A strong flavour for working with both computer modelling and experimental evaluation of indoor environmental quality and its effects on human comfort, performance and well-being
The candidate is expected to be fluent in spoken and written English.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
The daily working place is the DTU campus, Kongens Lyngby. An extended research stay at Aalto University is foreseen being part of the project.
